Going to see a child psychologist
As with many ADHD children, A. sometimes (often?) seems like a troubled, unhappy child. This is never easy for a parent since you want your child to be happy, even if he's hyperactive.
So after some conversations with A. during which we learned of his profound unhappiness, Sandra decided to look for a child psychologist who could help him. Someone referred one who had a good reputation and wasn't too far from us. After a long wait, we finally got a place in her schedule.
Things pretty much went like I thought they would. Sandra, A. and I met her, we chatted about A. and about ourselves, etc. She also had a few sessions alone with A. She evaluated him, etc. After a while, she told us that she felt that A. was not (I believe her words were) "troubled". Yes, he has problems and some unhappiness, but he's not a child with issues that need to be "fixed". She would be happy to continue meeting A., if we felt it was necessary, but there wasn't much she could do.
This isn't the first time I'd heard such comments. Also, on the mailing list that I run, at least one other parent mentioned such a conclusion after consulting. Such a conclusion is should, in a way, help us feel better about A. But in reality, it's somewhat discouraging. This brings me to some conclusions I'll explain in my next post for, as you'll read, we had a few more sessions with her.
